De Leon Panorama
This panorama of Texas Avenue was taken a short time after August 2, 1923. The photo used here shows a much more limited scene than the original which pans all the way from the south side of Reynosa east of Texas Avenue to the south side of Reynosa on the west side of Texas Avenue. The original was provided to the De Leon Centennial Committee by Deloyn Singleton and was used as the cover of the centennial book. This photo is from that cover.
In the original, there is a newspaper hanging in the window of Higginbothams (far left). It can vaguely be seen above the head of of the two men standing on the far left. By blowing up that newspaper we found that it was a Free Press announcing the death of President Warren G. Harding who died on August 2, 1923.
Notice the parking in the middle of the street. The F&M Bank is on the extreme right. The third man from the right is W.H. Smith who is standing at the door to the Steakley and Smith Store. He has his arm up and resting on bags of four. He indicated that at the time they thought setting bags of four at the door was good advertising.
A negative exist that shows more of the panorama and when located will replace this photo.
