1919 Bearcats
The 1919 Bearcat football team on the east side of the high school. Coach Paul Stern is standing in the back row. Team Captain Ralph Pittman is on the bottom row on the extreme right. The other players are not identified on the photo but included Emilo Van Zandt, Carrol Stover, Dean Rippetoe, John Weaver, Forrest Farmer, Starr Inzer, Autry Self, Paul Howell, Robert Howell, Robert Noel, Boyd Sharp, Oscar Cosby and Floyd Merritt. This was the first team to be called Bearcats (see Starr’s Bearcats).

Notice the well manicured turf, the lavish seating arrangements for the fans, the expensive goal posts and the outstanding scoreboard. This football field was about where the present high school building is located.
