If there ever was a “back to the future” team in De Leon history it has to be the 1936 Bearcats. The team record was an unimpressive 4-5-1 but what their kids did is a different story.
Terrill Sharp’s son Tony played on the 1959 District Championship team. His second son Donny quarterbacked the 1965 Bi-District Champions. His third son Boyd played on the 1969 Regional Championship team and his youngest son Bret, who was killed in a car accident in 1974, played on the 1973 District Championship team and would have played on the 1974 Regional Championship team.
Sam Weaver’s son Bodie was a receiver on the 1965 Bi-District Championship team and caught a Donnie Sharp pass for a touchdown to help defeat Goldthwaite in that game. He also won the State Championship in the 220 Intermediate Hurdles in 1966. And, oh yes, Sam’s grandson Trey was on the 1990 team that played for the State Championship and his other grandsons Andrew Brown and Jonathan Weaver both played on District Championship teams.
Revis Smith’s son Craig, just may have been the best all around player De Leon had in the second half of the twentieth century and with due respect to the Pittman Brothers and Honk Irvin maybe in all of Bearcat history As an All State Punter and and All State Quarterback, he led the Bearcats to the State Championship in 1975.
