Dr. A. C. Martin (1838-1904) moved to De Leon from Desdemona in the 1880s. He is thought to have been born in Alabama as was his wife, Louise A. Martin (in Mobile February 16, 1842). They were married in 1866 and came to Texas in 1867 eventually settling in Desdemona.
Their children included A.C. “Bun” Martin Jr. (1873-1934), Minnie (Mrs. W.B. McCain 1867-1966), Guy, Martie, Gus, and Ida Bell (Mrs. Eb E. Dabney 1869-1961).
In the summer of 1918, Mrs. Martin became the first woman to register to vote in De Leon and followed by casting her vote in the primary election later that summer.
