BIBBY’S
Allen Bibby announced that he intended to open a variety store in the Avant building on March 7, 1924 (the Avant building is the Wall of Recall building.) Bibby’s operated at that location until about 1950 and then switched places with Blacks Cafe moving to the Hampton building. Mrs. Bibby was a Hampton and the Hampton building was purchased from the estate of A.E. Hampton by Howard Bibby. The location had been the site of the Liberty and Texas Theaters for many years.
Bibby’s was sold in the late 1960s to Cled Heathington who retained the name until the building burned in 1972. When rebuilt, it operated as Heathington’s and later as Ronald’s after it was sold to Ronald Spruill.
