JOHNSON (Rucker)

Since the first settlers arrived in 1854, Comanche County has had at least 150 schools.  Through consolidations, there are now only four, De Leon, Gustine, Sidney and Comanche.  If the listing below happens to include all the schools that ever existed in Comanche County, it is simply though luck.  At the bottom are several schools districts which are not actually in Comanche County but whose districts either extend into the county or have merged into county schools.

In 1912, eight-five county schools remained (in addition to the independent schools).  By 1926 the number of county schools had dropped to 60, then down to 52 in 1927, 47 in 1928.  In 1915 there were 25 one teacher schools and about 8,000 rural students in the county system.  In 1928  there were only 9 one teacher schools with 5,025 rural students.

In 1927 the County board of Trustees classified the schools in the county according to a new state law.  One teacher schools were classified as elementary schools with five grades.  Two teacher schools were also classified as elementary schools but with seven grades.  Three teacher schools were classified as high schools with two high school grades. All these classifications had the option to add one more grade.  All schools of four or more teachers with more than ten grades were classified as high schools.  Schools with at least three teachers and classes that were exclusively for high school were classified as four year high schools.
