CAMPBELL AND HAM LUMBER
Campbell and Ham
James I. Campbell was the son of Cyrus Campbell and his second wife Minerva T. Clemmons Campbell. He was born about 1861.
His brother Cyrus M. Campbell had operated a successful lumber yard in Belton and had moved to Temple as his lumber yard grew.
James, then in McLennan County acquired land in De Leon on September 10, 1882. This was probably the lumber yard of Comanche County native John D. Ham. Some years later, Ham repurchased the lumber yard and Campbell moved to Houston. Ham eventually partnered with W.C. Streety and the lumber yard became Streety and Ham. In 1917 it was sold to C.G. Foust of Dublin whose family owned it until it closed in the late 1950s. The yard was located on the northeast corner of Austin and Gonzales. Following a fire apparently caused by a gas leak, the yard was torn down in the 1970s.
Campbell’s home was located on the southwest corner of Austin and Reynosa. It later became the Star Hotel and later the Lester Hotel.
