McGlothlin-Carter Wedding
This photograph of the wedding party of Lois Mandyce Carter and Barney R. McGlothlin was taken on September 18, 1917 in the front yard of a home which stood on the southwest corner of Austin and Hampton. The wedding was the first held in the First Methodist Church’s newly constructed building. The congregation had held the first church service there only nine days earlier on September 9th. Rev. W.H. Doss conducted the wedding. Miss Carter had served as a pianist for a Sunday School class.
Lois Carter is second woman from the left. McGlothlin is probably to the left of her. Lois was the daughter of F.E. and Francis Anderson Carter and a niece of Mrs. W.C. (Maggie Anderson) Streety. McGlothlin was living in De Leon at the time. The McGlothlins eventually moved to Fort Worth where he was employed by a milling company.
The home where the photo was taken later burned and was replaced by the red brick home now occupying the site. Behind the wedding party on the left is the Terrill home, now Nowlin Funeral Home. Along the right side is the Ayers home, later the F.R. Carter home (no relation) where the F&M Bank now stands.
