Much of the older population of the De Leon area came from Lafayette and Ponotoc counties in Mississippi between 1880 and 1910.
This photograph was made in Lafayete Springs, Mississippi of five Civil War Veterans. Three are ancestors of today’s De Leon families.
Standing left is Mr. York ancestor of Howard York of York Cafe and York Hotel in De Leon.
Standing in the center is Hiram Barron Smith great grand-father of Hiram Smith Jr.
Seated on the left is John Grisham ancestor of De Leon’s Grisham family.
The other two are not known. The hand lettering says “Henry Cowsert photographer, Lafayette Springs Miss.
