Doctors
Dr. J. E. Self was born in 1866 and died in 1936.
He is pictured here standing on the west side of Texas Avenue. The building at his left elbow is the Church of Christ.
Dr. Self came from Jasper, Alabama in 1896. His primary transportation around De Leon was a buggy and his wife Mellisa Alice Self had a surrey with the fringe on top.
Self hired Sam Bennett to tend the horses and hitch up Mrs. Self’s buggy. Mrs. Self is said to have taught Sunday School at the “little Baptist Church” which probably meant the church built in 1908. Her father had been a Baptist preacher.
