GROCERIES

Streety & Ham was one of the earlier groceries in De Leon.  Photo ca. 1895

The outside of City Market.  It began as a meat market evolving into a grocery over the years.  The Haffords always threw a pack of gum or small candy bar into the grocery bag as thanks for shopping there.

Steakley and Smith began as a grocery in the early 20’s, occupying the northern half of what was eventually consolidated into the F&M Bank building.  It evolved into Smiths Department Store, one of De Leon’s more important businesses.

Sloan’s Grocery occupied the Belyeu’s building in the 50’s before building a supermarket on Navarro.

Belyeu’s Grocery was located across from the present City Hall.

Holdridges had several locations before permanently locating at the intersection of Texas Avenue and the Sipe Springs Highway.

De Leon Grocery was located in the building that today houses  Cook Insurance.

In 1947 the grocery was purchased by Ira Crow and Elmer Hampton from O.A. Whitehurst and J.C. Hare.
