The De Leon Palaver
The De Leon Palaver began publication on Wednesday, April 12, 1967 as a new seven column newspaper owned by Gene Baker, then the publisher of the Gorman Progress. He set up offices at 107 N. Texas in the building immediately north of the Counts building. The paper was printed at the Progress’ office in Gorman.
Texas Governor Price Daniel bestowed the title of “Peanut Kernel of Texas” on Baker and when he wrote his weekly article “HULLS”, his byline was Kernel Gene, aPe. He explained that after he became famous, he added the the aPe from a book entitled An Amateur Publisher Editor to remind himself that he had been permitted to join one of he most highly prized professions in the world.
The paper lasted only a few months. The last two known issues were both dated May 17th as he apparently forgot to changed the dates in his banner. The actual last date of publication is believed to be May 24, 1967.
